When we began our quest to look outside of the USA for a new residence and were researching all of the different countries we might like to call home, we created a list of the ingredients or factors which we would like to have in place for our comfort and peace of mind. Chile rated quite high in virtually all of the areas we identified as "important" to us. As a location for investing in offshore real estate, retirement living, buying and owning either a retirement home or a vacation home or as an international destination for relocating our family, Chile really measured up. Real Estate in Chile is a good deal!
Maybe it was the seeming innocence and honesty of the Chilean people, their knowledge of right from wrong. Maybe it was the cleanliness or the intelligence of the average resident of Chile. Actually it was the sheer beauty and breathtaking scenery we found all over Chile coupled with the real estate in Chile. Also, there was the openness of the economy and the political system in Chile, the fact that foreign investment is not only allowed in Chile, it is invited! The country of Chile has a very stable democratic government, a high per capita GDP, low population density and Chile has a safe ethical population base in which to live, invest, buy real estate and prosper, not to mention the fact that Chile is a fabulous place to retire!
In Chile, one can invest in offshore Chilean Real Estate, move to Chile or retire in Chile for a fraction of what it would cost in the USA or Western Europe. As an option to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Asia or Australia or New Zealand, Chile is a bargain when you compare all of the different factors.
We have been amazed at the lack of nasty bugs, dangerous animals and inhospitable living conditions. While not what we would consider DIRT cheap, Chile is still quite a bargain. The real estate prices are significantly below most developed countries but in Chile you get a well educated society with a low rate of poverty and unemployment. Chile has been isolated geographically from the rest of the world but now, with the advent of modern telecommunications and transportation, Chile has emerged as the Latin American economic leader. In fact Chile's economic statistics compare favorably to Europe, New Zealand and most other First World Countries.
Chile is, quite simply a very beautiful, magical place where one can invest, purchase real estate, vacation and relocate to without the same concerns found in so many of the other "Retirement Havens" to be found at present. Many people have the misconception that because Chile is in South America, it has jungles, mosquitoes, Malaria, Dengue and Yellow Fever, poisonous snakes, pirhanas and tribes of jungle indians, as yet undiscovered by modern society. NONE of the above can be used to describe this most wonderful, precious land of many faces.... this country some people know only by its name alone.
We knew next-to-nothing about Chile just a few short years ago. "Chile," we thought, was a Third World country with many social and economic problems. We thought that it was impoverished with half-naked families dwelling in old, adobe structures that had never seen a coating of paint, perhaps old, ramshackle buildings with rusty tin roofs, looking as if they would leak like a seive if even a small amount of rain fell. NOT!!!!
Well, we are pleased to disappoint you! The Chile we have come to know and love is one of beautiful architecture, mysterious landscapes and wonderfuly kind and stimulating people.
Chile was once described thus:
"After the Creator formed the Earth, there were extra, pieces left. These pieces consisted of deep blue oceans, dramatic mountains, spectacular volcanoes, massive glaciers, crystal clear lakes, cool and clean rivers, vast mineral rich deserts and fertile agricultural valleys. The Creator looked over the new world, wondering what should be done with all these magnificent pieces. The Creator decided to take them to the farthest end of the world and there was created what we now call the land of Chile."
